NATURE NOTICES/MONARCH BUTTERFLY TRAIL

NatureScaping. An island-wide initiative to protect critical habitat, because when it is lost, Nature Notices

A resident may not care or notice if a tree is taken down, but nature notices when its home and food source is destroyed. The objective of the Nature Notices initiative is to encourage residents to:

  • Plant understory trees or shrubs when a tree is removed
  • Nature-scape parts of your lawn with groupings of native greenery and pollinator plants
  • Have your property certified as wildlife-friendly by the National Wildlife Federation. It’s easy!

Removing Trees?  Choose NatureScaping! – a water-saving approach to landscaping that provides a more beautiful home for you – and a home for nature, too!  Planning to remove trees? Join an island-wide initiative to “remove one – plant one!” Replace each tree with native, drought-tolerant greenery – smaller trees or shrubs – anywhere in your yard, to continue to provide habitat for wildlife and enhance the value of your home.

Residents also are encouraged to replace any part of their lawn with groupings of native trees, shrubs, flowers and groundcover to reduce water use and provide even more habitat. Many island homeowners already have nature-scaped.

Benefits

Benefits:

  • Nature-scaping can:
  • lower water bills
  • increase home values
  • decrease chemical use
  • decrease lawn maintenance
  • provide habitat for declining populations of birds, butterflies, and other wildlife
