Honeybees are among the newest residents at the pollinator garden at Sparrow Field, and two Landings beekeepers are offering an opportunity to come learn about their busy little charges on Saturday, July 20.
John and Elena Boshier came to The Landings with 12 years of beekeeping experience. They established and maintain two honeybee colonies at Sparrow Field, and invite residents to come gain a greater understanding of bees, beekeeping and the tremendously important role bees play in food production and in nature.
Their presentation is set for 9 a.m. July 20 at Sparrow Field which is located off Bartram Road, near the north end of Pettigrew Drive. No advance registration required. The free event will take place weather permitting. Parking is limited.
“Honeybee colonies have been in sharp decline nationwide since 2006, and we so are extremely fortunate to have the Boshiers bring these two colonies to our island,” said Skidaway Audubon President Dawn Cordo.
The pollinator garden at Sparrow Field is home to more than 100 species of flowering plants that attract butterflies, bees, dragonflies and other insects essential to the pollination of most flowering trees, plants and food crops. It is a great resource for residents interested in learning what thrives on the island, and also serves as an outdoor classroom for Master Gardeners, photographers, birders and other nature enthusiasts. The gardens are maintained by Skidaway Audubon volunteers. To learn more, visit SkidawayAudubon.org.
